** INSIGHT
------------------------------------------------------------

** What Does It Mean to Be a Responsive Steward?
------------------------------------------------------------

PEAK’s Lita Pardi reflects on her experiences in philanthropy and the action steps funders can take to become responsive—as opposed to responsible—stewards of their assets, operationalize more equitable grantmaking practices, and unlock the potential to achieve long-term and sustainable community impact.

** Our New Collection of Steward Responsively Resources
------------------------------------------------------------

Through our Steward Responsively Principle ([link removed]) , PEAK Grantmaking calls on funders to reframe risk and to recalibrate their vetting process to make it more transparent, more trust-based, more nonprofit- and community-centered, and less burdensome. Being a change agent for responsive stewardship begins with three actions. Start with our action planner—Strategies to Steward Responsively ([link removed]) —for guidance on how to reframe risk and rightsize your vetting process, recalibrate how you assess financials, and use technology to elevate equity and efficiency. Then, dive into our collection of how-to guides, exclusive to PEAK’s Organization and Consultant Members.

** PEAK Peer Network Spotlight
------------------------------------------------------------

PEAK offers members diverse peer spaces for learning, sharing, and evolving in our thriving chapters ([link removed]) and peer groups ([link removed]) , which include caucuses, affinity groups, communities of practice, and working groups. Each month, we’ll showcase the meaningful programming and networking taking place in these volunteer-led spaces.

Members of the PEAK Northeast chapter (seen above) gathered in-person last month for the first time since 2019. About 70 people registered to attend the new member breakfast event graciously hosted at the Ford Foundation. During the breakfast, attendees got to know one another through fun icebreakers. They also learned about upcoming Northeast Chapter programming and the benefits of being a PEAK chapter volunteer ([link removed]) .

In mid-March, members of PEAK’s Small Foundations Affinity Group gathered virtually to discuss some of their recent challenges and methods for improving their grantmaking practices. It was a peer learning ([link removed]) opportunity where attendees were able to ask questions and get answers from their small foundations colleagues.

** PEAK In Community
------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s the latest on how PEAK is actively engaging with the philanthropic sector and leading the way in advancing equitable, effective grantmaking practices.

PEAK has joined with more than 22 foundations and philanthropy-supporting organizations in signing on to Funders for LGBTQ Issues’ We Will Only Move Forward Together: An Open Call to Philanthropy, ([link removed]) a statement of solidarity that calls philanthropy to “act to resource our transgender and gender-nonconforming community in this moment of crisis in this most crucial moment. The situation is dire and we know philanthropy can and must do more.”

Last month, Satonya Fair and Vu Le copresented at Stanford Social Innovation Review's 2023 Frontiers of Social Innovation virtual conference. In their spirited, frank conversation aboutDemocratizing Philanthropy ([link removed]) , Satonya and Vu delved into how philanthropy can become more responsive to the people, organizations, and communities it seeks to serve.

Partnerships Director C. Davis Parchment joined the monthly meeting of the Nonprofit Infrastructure Investment Advocacy Group (NIIAG), a coalition chaired by Independent Sector and KABOOM! to identify and advocate for the essential federal investments needed to rebuild the nation in the wake of the pandemic, economic crisis, and the ongoing racial injustice reckoning. PEAK has joined the NIIAG coalition, and we look forward to contributing to the group's efforts to prioritize investments in (and through) nonprofits that strengthen civic bonds, put people back to work rebuilding our communities, and provide at a national scale the critical resources and services nonprofits need to accomplish their missions.

PEAK Chief Operating Officer Dolores Estrada and Programs and Knowledge Director Lita Pardi engaged with PEAK’s Rocky Mountain and Northern California chapters in a workshop focusing on oral and alternative grant reporting. Two members, Libra Foundation’s Jenny Herrera and Grove Foundations’s Blanch Vance, shared their organizations' journeys in shifting their reporting practices.

As a Council on Foundations Career Pathways graduate, Satonya has stayed engaged with program leadership and participants. She recently joined the current cohort to share her leadership journey and how her leadership style has been shaped over the years. This month, Satonya also joined PEAK staffers Nichia McFarlane, Kyle Reynolds, and Dionne Thompson at ABFE’s annual Harambee conference.
