Joint Subcommittee on Energy and the Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change Hearing on Out of Control: The Impact of Wildfires on our Power Sector and the Environment

  • The recent wildfires in California and Australia are a stark reminder of the climate crisis facing our nation, and of the impacts that this crisis is already having on our homes, communities and critical infrastructure. In Brooklyn, more intense heat-waves and storms due to climate change are a serious threat to our local power grid, triggering blackouts in many recent years. In the face of this challenge it is imperative that we take steps to protect our communities and make our power sector smarter and more resilient.

Subcommittee on Communications and Technology Hearing on Empowering and Connecting Communities through Digital Equity and Internet Adoption

  • The American people deserve access to broadband devices, the internet and affordable services. Congressman McNerney, Lujan and I recently introduced H.R. 4486, the Digital Equity Act to ensure every person is provided access to the digital literacy they deserve in 2020 and beyond. Information is power and someone’s income level or neighborhood should have zero impact on their access to broadband internet.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH:

Image

As we enter into Black History Month, I reflect on the life and legacy of Shirley Chisholm who has had a great impact on my own life. See tweet here.

‪Shirley Chisholm first ran for Congress in 1968, and won, going on to serve seven terms as a US Representative.‬ As the 1st Black woman to be elected to a Congressional seat, she fiercely advocated for social justice and minority education opportunities. See post here

Unbought and unbossed (her famous catch phrase), Shirley Chisholm leaves behind a rich legacy, and inspires me every day to work tirelessly as an advocate for our community. Today, and every day, we celebrate the queen, Shirley Chisholm. See tweet here.

Spike Lee is a staple of Brooklyn’s pop culture, and an icon known across the country. One of my favorite Spike Lee joints, Do the Right Thing, debuted in 1989 and is an incredible portrait of Brooklyn and the values important to our borough. See post here.
