John, we want you to see this:
ELLE has been following Summer and her fellow people-powered freshman Congresswomen of color (and roommate!) Delia Ramirez since their first days in Congress. To celebrate their first 100 days in office, they released an unfiltered profile — including a GRWM video of Summer and Delia's morning routines where they get real about beauty expectations for BIPOC women, caring for Black hair, and makeup routines!
The profile covers everything Summer has been up to since joining Congress — finding a roommate and place to live in Washington DC, finally being sworn in days after planned, and receiving committee assignments. Plus, Summer's go to snacks and off-brand Red Bull flavor for long nights at the Capitol.
In the article, Summer discusses the politics of being Pennsylvania's first Black Congresswoman and one of the few working-class women of color in Congress. Here's just some of what she had to say:
"The people who tried to ensure that Pennsylvania would never have a Black congresswoman aren’t going to stop because they lost. They’re going to have a more honed technique. I don’t have the privilege of not being challenged. We’re running all the time, and you’re always being attacked. I keep my walls bare as a reminder that you’re not guaranteed another term, so do everything you can with the term you’re given.
Next, I’m looking forward to realizing the ways in which I can be most useful to this greater movement in my new position… I’m looking forward to the ways in which we can find ways to really shake some shit up."
John, it is because of this multi-racial, multi-generational movement that Summer is in Congress fighting for Western Pennsylvania and everyday people. But Summer can't do this alone.
In solidarity,
Team Summer
