Citizens for Ethics & Responsibility in Washington

John,

In just the past week, I’ve been on MSNBC and CNN, and CREW’s Chief Ethics Counsel Virginia Canter spoke with NPR’s Morning Edition.

We’ve been busy here at CREW – and that’s because the news about Clarence Thomas’s ethics scandals is absolutely unprecedented.

CREW took the lead in demanding Clarence Thomas be investigated for failing to disclose both hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts from and property sales to billionaire donor Harlan Crow.

We’re fighting to hold the Supreme Court to a higher standard, and we need your help to do it.

And John, there’s never been a better time to make a donation – because a generous donor is matching up to $10,000 in donations to CREW between now and the end of the month!

Make your first donation to CREW today and it will be matched, doubling your support! →

No one else does the work that we do here at CREW. With a unique combination of hard-working lawyers, great research, and strategic decision-making about where to put our efforts, CREW is committed to plowing a path of accountability, and doing groundbreaking work that no one else is doing.

At CREW, we don't just say things. We take action.

The Supreme Court is our nation's highest court. Clarence Thomas accepting – repeatedly – private plane trips, yacht cruises, luxury resort vacations, without disclosing them, is likely a violation of the law, and it unquestionably damages America’s faith in the Court.

There needs to be an investigation of Thomas, either a serious investigation by the Chief Justice or, maybe even better, an investigation by the Department of Justice, because Thomas’s conduct may well be criminal as well as unethical.

We have to keep the pressure on for a full investigation of Clarence Thomas.

Every single contribution made to CREW today goes directly toward our work pursuing accountability, shining a light on Thomas’s corruption, and pushing for judicial reform.

If you want to ensure that work continues, I hope you’ll consider making a matched donation today to double your impact in our fight for accountability →

We can’t do this without your support,

John,

It’s hard to overstate the seriousness of the recent bombshell revelations about Clarence Thomas’s decades-long patronage relationship with billionaire Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow.

The fact that Justice Thomas felt comfortable accepting a series of opulent gifts and vacations from the reclusive real estate mogul is an obvious indictment of our judicial ethics system. And the fact that he appears to have concealed these benefits from the public may be just as great a problem.

CREW explained in our recent complaint to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Chief Justice John Roberts that Thomas’s decision not to disclose these luxuries as gifts or in-kind travel-reimbursements — and concealing the real estate transactions — likely violated the Ethics in Government Act. I wrote all about why this cover-up damages public trust in the Court in my op-ed for MSNBC (you can read that here).

For the sake of the legitimacy of the Supreme Court, we must make sure that Clarence Thomas is investigated and held accountable for any wrongdoing.

We’re not the only ones who believe that. That’s why a generous donor is matching up to $10,000 in donations made to CREW through the end of the month to make sure we have the resources we need to fight for an investigation and accountability.

Read the op-ed — and then, consider making a matched donation to help ensure we make an investigation happen, and hold Clarence Thomas accountable →
