Dear John,
Yom Ha’atzmaut, which marks the 75th anniversary of the day Israel declared its independence, is a time for celebration. This small nation has weathered so many challenges and is now facing a barrage of attacks on various fronts, yet it is still thriving.

Celebrate 75
But while it is a time of joy, the protests over proposed judicial reforms reflect the concern and anxiety many Israelis feel about the country’s future.
As an Israeli who spent many years representing Israel abroad, including most recently as Israel’s Ambassador to Chile, I view these protests from a unique viewpoint. I see a relatively young country going through growing pains, and a people passionate about the future of their country and the health of its democracy. As ADL’s new Senior Vice President for International Affairs, I am proud to lead our International Affairs team, including ADL’s office in Israel, in advocating for a democratic, pluralistic and cohesive society.
I know that there are some anti-Israel actors who see this moment of tension as an opportunity to malign and demonize Israel. We will not remain silent in the face of those hateful voices, and are committed to rejecting antisemitism, anti-Zionism, the BDS movement and other efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel.

Now, Israel has a history of its own — including a vital role as a haven for Jews in danger. We have seen Jews from Arab countries, the former Soviet Union, Argentina, Ethiopia and other regions find refuge in Israel.
We have witnessed Israel’s many successes — economic, technological and cultural, as well as diplomatic achievements such as the Abraham Accords. The strong and bipartisan U.S.-Israel relationship, and the admiration so many Americans have for the Jewish State is a point of pride for the U.S. and global Jewish community, and something we must continue nurturing and advocating for.
So, on the occasion of Israel’s 75th, please join me in celebrating the miracle of Israel, and showing our ongoing support for its well-being as a strong Jewish and democratic state. We encourage you to dive into this
