Dear John,

Last week, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy unveiled his debt limit bill, which would raise the debt ceiling (which is related to the amount the United States needs to meet existing obligations) through early next year (March 31, 2024 at the latest) in exchange for over $3 trillion of discretionary spending cuts over the next decade. This bill trades a short-term increase in the debt ceiling for long-term cuts to programs that would leave more people hungry, homeless, and without health insurance. Speaker McCarthy is expected to bring this bill to a vote as early as today, Wednesday April 26.

This bill would expand SNAP’s already harsh time limit for adults 18-49 without children, which limits them to only 3 months of SNAP in a 3-year period unless they can document that they work 20 hours per week or meet an exemption. Speaker McCarthy’s bill would expand this draconian rule to include individuals aged 50-55, without any evidence that it leads to increased employment or earnings. This could take food away from millions of struggling adults.
