The same far-right forces that tried to dismantle the Endangered Species Act under Trump are right back at it.
They're proposing a perverse bill that would allow habitat to be destroyed — and then claim that since wildlife don't live there at the moment, it doesn't need protection. But the science is clear that you can't save species, and you can't stop the extinction crisis, without protecting the lands and waters they need to live.
This attack comes after a separate bill was introduced to take away federal protection from gray wolves across the lower 48.
And to make matters worse, members of Congress are now hell-bent on stripping protections from other species, including lesser prairie chickens (protected just last November) and northern long-eared bats. This plan will push these species closer to the brink while industry runs roughshod over their already-shrinking habitat.
The Act was created 50 years ago to save our country's wildlife. It's been remarkably effective, saving 99% of the species granted its protection.
This vital law is how the Center wins in the courts again and again to save species like California spotted owls, humpback whales, caribou in the Far North, and Hermes copper butterflies.
Now Congress wants to dismantle the Endangered Species Act. We won't let that happen.
Over the past 30-plus years, the Center has locked in protections for more than 740 animals and plants and half a billion acres of habitat.
None of that happens without the Act and its incredible power to save the world's most vulnerable species. Simply put, our world would be lonelier place without it.
