An analysis using five independent models concluded that VMMC will remain a cost-effective — and often cost-saving — intervention in sub-Saharan Africa for at least the next five years.

A review of performance indicators for VMMC programmes in 15 countries revealed that the number of procedures performed dropped by 32% in 2020 compared to 2019, largely due to COVID-19 mitigation measures.

A cost comparison found that using two-way texting for post-VMMC follow-up in South Africa resulted in an average savings of $US 2.23 per client compared to providing routine in-person follow-up.

Other abstracts featured in the digest address post-circumcision sexual behavior, biological explanations for VMMC’s protective effects, the cost of VMMC campaigns versus facility-based services in Kenya, the acceptability of integrating couples HIV testing and counseling in VMMC services in Malawi, and the factors associated with VMMC uptake among different populations in South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

Best regards,

Clearinghouse Webmaster
