Huge news.
I just walked out of the Governor’s Office where Governor Inslee signed my Attorney General Request Legislation prohibiting the sale, manufacture, and import of assault weapons in Washington.
This victory is a testament to the movement we’ve built together and a lesson in perseverance.
I first introduced this bill seven years ago when the National Rifle Association had spent more on candidates running for office in Washington state than any other state in the country.1 Our proposal didn’t make it out of committee that first year. Or the year after that. Or the year after that. I committed to proposing that legislation until it passed the Legislature. And this year we finally got it across the finish line.
We stood up to the gun lobby, and we won — but we know they won’t go down without a fight.
Please add your name if you’re with me in this fight to continue to push for responsible gun safety legislation.
For too long, politicians have offered “thoughts and prayers” in the face of mass shooting after mass shooting. Inaction has persisted for too long. I’m grateful to those that stood with me and made this possible.
No single bill will solve Washington's gun violence problem, but I’m confident that this victory gets us one step closer.
Thank you for your support.
