House Republicans — as part of their brinkmanship over the urgent need to raise the debt ceiling — are about to pass an extortionate proposal to slash government spending.

Republicans claim this plan shows they are “responsible” and “serious.”

That’s a lie.

The Republican plan would force an across-the-board 22% cut in government spending.

(Except for military spending — Congress keeps giving the Pentagon even more money than it asks for).

Here are just a few examples of what the Republicans’ draconian cuts would mean in practice:

200,000 children would lose access to Head Start and 100,000 children would lose access to child care.

A million older adults would lose access to nutrition services like Meals on Wheels.

Due to reduced investigations, 135,000 workers would lose an average of $1,000 in back wages.

2 million vulnerable individuals and families, including rural and underserved populations, would lose access to health care services through Community Health Centers.

Nearly 5 million low-income households could have their home heating or cooling benefits cut by hundreds of dollars.

Tell President Biden and Congressional Democrats:

The extortionate plan by House Republicans to slash government spending is cruel and anti-American. It must not be allowed to become the basis for any negotiation. The debt ceiling should be raised without conditions. Full stop.
