Liz WillenDear reader,

Increasingly, conversations about education are filled with phrases like “parental choice” and “parental rights.” This week, we published a story with our partner USA Today that talks about how difficult it can be to implement “choice,” with a look at a Florida county where some are eyeing the state’s recent expansion of school vouchers with wariness.

A second story explores what happens when teachers – who have been increasingly frustrated and burned out since the pandemic – actually take charge and run schools, an option parents might be able to choose if such “teacher-powered” models continue to grow. The Hechinger Report’s Caroline Preston spent time in a Boston school that has embraced the approach.

Our dual focus on innovation and inequality means we are constantly exploring such trends, and it’s one reason we love hearing from readers, including those who send in opinion pieces and help take us inside school districts throughout the U.S. And every week, you can count on columnist Jill Barshay to dig deep into the latest studies on topics like the reading wars for a thorough explanation.
