*Blawnox
Borough Receives Three Grants!*
I was excited to join Rep. Mandy
Steele to celebrate Blawnox Borough [link 4] for recently receiving
three LSA grants [link 5] that will allow them to install 8 lighted
crosswalks along Freeport Road, replace and upgrade the sidewalks
leading to their Community Park, and purchase a new truck and
snowplow!
These crosswalks and sidewalks are vital pieces of
infrastructure that will keep this community connected and thriving
for years to come!

*Trout
Stocking with PA Fish and Boat Commission, Allison Park Sportsmen's
Club, and Rep. Arvind Venkat*
We had absolutely beautiful weather for
trout stocking last week with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat
Commission [link 7] at North Park [link 8] (and we're missing that
weather already)! With help from the Allison Park Sportsmen's Club, we
made quick work of getting the fish into the lake and ready for
anglers. It's o-fish-ally trout season-- get out there and cast your
lines!
If you live in the Avonworth, Hampton, or North Allegheny
School District, you might also be a constituent of Representative
Arvind Venkat. Check out his website and sign up for his newsletter at

*Joint
Policy Committee Hearing on Supportive Education for Neurodivergent
Students*
On April 14, the Pennsylvania Senate Democratic Caucus
[link 18] Policy Committee and PA House Democratic Policy Committee
[link 19] held a joint hearing on supportive education for
neurodivergent students.
I'm incredibly grateful for the students and
parents who took the time to speak with us about their lived
experiences. We often only hear from experts at these hearings, but
it's important to also hear the perspectives of neurodivergent
students and parents directly impacted by our decisions as
legislators. Testifying at a public hearing can be incredibly
overwhelming, so I appreciate how much work went into preparing and
sharing their stories with all of us--and I want them all to know how
impactful their words were. I'm committed to working on legislation
and policy that will provide our students with the resources that they
need to thrive in affirming, inclusive, and safe educational
environments.
You can watch the hearing any time at Joint Policy
Committee Hearing: Neuro-Affirming Education in our Schools - Senator
Lindsey Williams [link 20].

*Need for Universal School Meals Highlighted on Matter of
Fact with Soledad O'Brien*
Senator Judy Schwank [link 23], Rep. Emily
Kinkead [link 24], and I are working so hard to ensure Universal
School Meals for all kids in Pennsylvania because hungry kids can't
learn and our school districts can't afford to absorb lunch debt.
Thank you Soledad O'Brien and Matter of Fact [link 25] for covering
this incredibly important issue for our students and families [link
26]!
This is a great look at how some districts and individual
buildings are addressing student hunger, but we need a statewide
solution to keep kids fed, safe, and ready to learn. Show your support
for Universal Meals for All today! School Nutrition Association of
Pennsylvania - Universal Meals for All (snapa.org) [link 27]

*Spring
Thunderstorm Readiness*
April 19th to 23rd is Severe Weather
Awareness Week in Pennsylvania. Although thunderstorms can happen any
time of the year, as the seasons change to spring and summer,
thunderstorms become more frequent. Thunderstorm hazards include
tornadoes, damaging wind, large hail, flooding rain, and lightning.
The National Weather Service [link 40] issues "watches'' and
"warnings" for these storms when there is a potential threat to life
or property.
A severe thunderstorm watch is issued for a large
geographical area (multiple counties) over a several-hour period when
conditions are ripe for severe weather. All the ingredients for severe
weather are present if a watch is issued, but storms have yet to form
or have not reached the watch area. You should prepare for the onset
of the storm to occur within a few hours.
Severe thunderstorm
warnings are issued for smaller geographic areas and for a shorter
period of time (about an hour) when a thunderstorm is imminent. Severe
thunderstorms are warned when a storm is capable of producing any one
of the following: winds in excess of 58 mph, hail greater than
one-inch in diameter, or a potential tornado. Note, lightning is not
warned, as it is an indirect hazard of any thunderstorm. Take severe
thunderstorm warnings seriously!
ReadyPA [link 41], the Pennsylvania
Emergency Management Agency's [link 42] emergency preparedness
information resource, recommends the following before, during, and
after a thunderstorm:
*Before:*
-
Know where you live, work, and
travel most often. Severe weather alerts are issued by geographic
regions.
-
Have at least two methods to receive severe weather
alerts, such as a cell phone, TV, NOAA Weather Radio.
-
Monitor the
forecast regularly to plan activities around storms.
*During:*
-
If
you see lightning or hear thunder, seek shelter indoors as quickly as
possible.
-
Move to the lowest floor and avoid windows, plumbing,
and corded electronics.
-
If stuck outdoors, avoid tall objects such
as trees and radio towers, seek the nearest enclosed
shelter.
*After:*
-
Monitor a source of weather information and
don't go back outdoors until it's deemed safe (at least one-half hour
after the last rumble of thunder).
-
Check on family members and
neighbors to see if they are ok or need assistance.
-
Assess damages
and report any life-threatening issues to 9-1-1. Take photos and
report other damages to the NWS and insurance if necessary.
-
Avoid
walking through any damaged areas and stay away from flood waters or
downed utilities.
