For the first time in history, the United States government might default on its debt — there’s just one month left for Congress to raise the debt ceiling.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the GOP are using this opportunity to hold our government hostage and demand $4.5 TRILLION in cuts that will hurt our communities. These cuts will result in:

• 430,000 low-income families losing public housing;
• 1 million fewer senior citizens receiving food from Meals on Wheels;
• 200,000 children losing access to Head Start programs;
• Less firefighters, police officers, and other law enforcement personnel.

Plus, they want to completely repeal the clean energy advancements made in the Inflation Reduction Act — the largest investment in clean energy and climate action in U.S. history — including more than 142,000 jobs.

Whether it's rolling back our basic freedoms like reproductive choice or cutting services and jobs that people rely on, the far-right GOP are trying to force New Mexico and our country backward, and I won’t accept it.
