Dear John,
As you have probably heard, taking the life of an unborn child is back in the courts and in public conversation. But at the center of this debate is what Family Research Council advocates for -- protecting unborn babies and their mothers' safety and health.
The news on this issue has changed almost daily, but you can count on FRC to keep you informed so you can understand exactly what is at stake.
So, what is happening?
It's been nearly a year since the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade. This victory opened the door for elected representatives in Congress and at the state level to enact laws to protect unborn children and their mothers.
Meanwhile, the chemical abortion drug mifepristone has increasingly become the abortion industry's long-term strategy to make abortions "self-managed" and unrestricted, thereby circumventing state pro-life laws. As of 2020, chemical abortions accounted for over half of all abortions in the United States.
A recent New York Times article admitted that as many as 1 in 20 to 1 in 33 women will require an additional procedure to complete the abortion or remove tissue after taking mifepristone. That's not even accounting for other serious complications women experience.
Despite the dangers this drug presents to women, in January, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) finalized a rule change allowing retail pharmacies to sell mifepristone with a prescription. CVS and Walgreens quickly indicated they would follow the lead of the Biden FDA, expanding access to the controversial drugs.
The abortion industry and their allies are shamelessly subjecting women and their unborn children to this dangerous drug, but FRC is prepared and mobilized to engage on the side of pro-life truth.
Will you join our efforts as we work with federal and state lawmakers to keep neighborhoods and pharmacies free from abortion?
DONATE NOW
Thankfully, thousands of pro-life Americans have already made their voices heard!
Twenty state attorneys general sent a letter to CVS and Walgreens warning the pharmacy giants of the potential legal repercussions of mailing abortion pills in their states.
FRC also led a coalition of thirteen pro-life organizations in sending a letter to CVS and Walgreens -- while our legislative affiliate, FRC Action gathered over 50,000 petition signatures -- urging the national pharmacies to stop selling mifepristone.
In an encouraging development, Walgreens Boots Alliance Executive Vice President Danielle Gray confirmed in a letter that the pharmacy chain would refrain from selling chemical abortion drugs in its Kansas locations. The letter came in response to a message from Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach (R), who informed Walgreens that it would be in violation of both federal and state law if it were to mail chemical abortion drugs into the state or distribute the drugs to customers by mail. Kansas state law requires chemical abortion drugs to be dispensed in person as a safety precaution for the woman.
Attorney General Kobach concluded his letter to Gray by saying, "President Biden is beholden to the country's most extreme pro-abortion voices, who constantly advocate for expanding the abortion regime without any consideration of legality or even women's safety. But nothing requires you to join him. The law says what it says. I encourage you to follow it."
The Walgreens decision in Kansas is a small victory, but all eyes are now on a case out of Texas that is challenging the FDA's original politically motivated approval of the abortion drug regimen over 23 years ago.
With a second ruling from a Washington state court over the same issue, chemical abortion could end up at the U.S. Supreme Court.
PARTNER WITH FRC
Here at FRC, we are not waiting for court decisions; we are engaging right now to protect the sanctity of human life -- both baby and mother.
According to Mary Szoch, FRC's director of the Center for Human Dignity, Americans must focus on the facts of this issue. "Chemical abortion drugs take the lives of unborn Americans, often putting their mothers' lives in danger as part of the 'process'...The reality is that what the abortion industry told her was a clump of cells is, in fact, her recognizable unborn baby -- delivered dead into the toilet."
Chemical abortion is dangerous to both women and their children.
John, we need your pro-life voice TODAY to counter the abortion lobby's lies.
FRC is already hard at work getting timely information on this issue to every pro-life American through our daily Washington Watch broadcast and The Washington Stand news outlet. We are also encouraging elected leaders nationwide to promote pro-life policies and equipping believers to pray.
Will you support our work at this critical time?
Let's pray that the courts will repeal the politically motivated FDA approval of mifepristone, and that ultimately, precious lives will be saved in the womb.
Thank you for your prayers and financial support that sustains our mission to protect life for future generations.
