Don’t Let Horses Suffer

Donate Now

Friend,

One of horseracing’s biggest events—the Kentucky Derby—is just around the corner. But even as the country celebrates these equines, thousands of horses just like those on the track are being transported to other countries to be slaughtered.

Many prefer to ignore this reality—but I know that you don’t, Friend. That’s why I hope you’ll make a $20 gift to the Humane Society Legislative Fund today.

Your support will help to advance the SAFE Act in Congress to ban horse slaughter in the U.S. and stop horses from being shipped across our borders to be slaughtered for their meat. But that’s not all your support does to protect horses. It also helps us fight to end the cruel practice of horse soring, where trainers use a variety of gruesome techniques, including caustic chemicals that burn the horse's flesh, chains and heavy, stacked horseshoes to force the horse to perform an artificial, exaggerated gait known as the “Big Lick.”

Despite Congress trying to ban the practice, soring continues to be widespread in a small segment of the industry due to lax oversight and the fact that the horses who perform the “Big Lick” continue to be awarded blue ribbons. That’s why we’re fighting to pass the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act—to finally put an end to this cruelty.

As people gather to marvel at the equines competing for the Triple Crown, we cannot forget the horses suffering in the shadows. Please give as generously as you can—we must stop animal cruelty wherever it persists. You can make a powerful difference with your contribution to HSLF today.

Thank you,
