Congratulations to Marjorie for identifying the Northern Rough Greensnake (Opheodrys aestivus). This species is larger than the Smooth Green Snake and can be distinguished by its keeled scales. According to the Virginia Herpetological Association, the Rough Green Snake is found in 84 counties in Virginia, including all of the counties ASNV covers, while the Smooth Green Snake is found in just 17 counties in the Northeastern part of the state. These snakes are in decline, possibly from the use of herbicide and pesticide. Snakes are a valuable part of our foodweb.
