John, can I have a moment to explain the stakes of what we are presently facing in this country?

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported last month that Earth is likely to experience a 1.5 degree Celsius increase to the global average temperature by the 2030s. That would represent a failure of the mission set forth in the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

The Inflation Reduction Act made record investments in clean energy, but we must do more. We are running out of time to act.

We are also running out of time to protect abortion access. Conservatives on the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, many states are passing abortion bans, and now there is a coordinated attack on access to the abortion pill mifepristone — an FDA-approved medicine that has been in circulation for over 20 years and which every study shows is safe.

And among many other issues, gun violence is now the leading cause of death for children under 18 — as young people across this country speak up and fight for the common sense changes we need to save lives.

John, on these issues and many more, the difference between a Democratic or Republican Senate majority is profound.

We need a Senate that will aggressively act to combat climate change, not give away tax breaks and the future of this planet to fossil fuel companies.

We need a Senate that will protect reproductive freedom and address the crises of maternal and infant mortality, not ban abortion and make it harder to access essential health care.

And we need a Senate that will stand up to the NRA and gun lobby by passing common sense gun safety legislation — rather than one that fails to act out of debilitating political cowardice.
