Dear members and supporters,
This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse
in Bangladesh, a preventable disaster that killed more than 1,000 garment
workers and injured 2,500 more — the vast majority of them women workers.
Despite large cracks appearing in the building the prior day, resulting in
the CLOSURE [5] of the lower floor shops and bank, management forced
workers to return to their jobs making clothing for retailers from Prada to
Zara. The devastating collapse took fewer than 90 SECONDS [6], and its
REVERBERATIONS AND CALLS FOR REFORM IN THE GARMENT INDUSTRY [7] continue to
be felt today.
Systemic violence, so brutally inflicted upon the workers of Rana Plaza, is
both a root cause and a direct outcome of the capitalism that creates and
maintains our current climate crisis.
The WORLD MARCH OF WOMEN (WMW) [8], a leader in the international feminist
movement for gender equality and ending discrimination against women and
gender-expansive people, is calling for a virtual rally as part of the
annual remembrance of Rana Plaza.
As the host of the U.S. chapter of the WMW, we are holding our virtual
rally on Tuesday, April 25, in collaboration with member organizations
DESIS RISING UP & MOVING (DRUM) [4] and FLORIDA IMMIGRANT COALITION (FLIC)
[3]. We will commemorate this tragedy and discuss the impact of U.S.
immigration policy on migrants from South Asia, Central America, and the
Caribbean — all of whom are also affected by climate crisis.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a program allowing migrants from unsafe
places to live and work in the U.S. for short periods of time. More than
350,000 people, mainly from Central America, are enrolled today. Expanding
TPS and establishing a pathway to citizenship is part of FLIC’s FEDERAL
CAMPAIGN FOR IMMIGRATION RELIEF [9].
As climate turmoil worsens, we must connect the national fight to expand
TPS to include existing and new climate refugees as part of a reparative
and accountable practice for the U.S., a worldwide leader in carbon
pollution.
Bangladesh is one of the most climate vulnerable countries on Earth,
producing only one-half of one percent of global emissions, but ranking
seventh in the world most affected by climate change. An estimated ONE OUT
OF SEVEN [10] of its projected 200+ million people are expected to be
displaced by climate conditions in 2050. WOMEN AND FEMMES ARE AT PARTICULAR
RISK [11] of violence and death due to lower social status and fewer
economic options, resources, and rights.
We lift up the women and gender-oppressed people around the world
developing solutions for real economic recovery, expanding worker rights,
demanding climate reparations, and resisting forced migration.

Estimades miembros y simpatizantes,
Este año marca el décimo aniversario del colapso de la fábrica Rana
Plaza en Bangladesh, un desastre previsible que mató a más de 1000
trabajadoras de la confección e hirió a otras 2500, la gran mayoría de
ellas mujeres trabajadoras.
A pesar de que aparecieron grandes grietas en el edificio el día anterior,
lo que resultó en el CIERRE [5] de las tiendas del piso inferior y del
banco, la gerencia obligó a los trabajadores a regresar a sus trabajos
haciendo ropa para tiendas como Prada y Zara. El devastador colapso duró
menos de 90 SEGUNDOS [6], y sus REPERCUSIONES Y LLAMADOS A REFORMAR LA
INDUSTRIA DE LA CONFECCIÓN [12] continúan sintiéndose hoy.
La violencia sistémica, tal como la soportarn les sobrevivientes y lo
evidenciaron las víctimas de Rana Plaza, es tanto una causa fundamental
como un resultado directo del capitalismo que crea y mantiene nuestra
actual crisis climática.
Parte del movimiento feminista internacional que apoya la igualdad de
género y pone fin a la discriminación contra las mujeres y la gente de
genero variado.
Para conmemorar este aniversario, la MARCHA MUNDIAL DE LAS MUJERES (MMM)
[13] está convocando a un mitin virtual como parte del recuerdo anual de
la calamidad de Rana Plaza.
Como anfitriones del capítulo estadounidense de la WMW, realizaremos
nuestro mitin virtual el martes 25 de abril, en colaboración con las

El Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS) es un programa que permite a les
inmigrantes de lugares inseguros vivir y trabajar en los EE. UU. por
períodos cortos de tiempo. Más de 350.000 personas, principalmente de
Centroamérica, están inscritas hoy. Ampliar el TPS y establecer un camino
hacia la ciudadanía es parte de LA CAMPAÑA FEDERAL PARA EL ALIVIO DE LA
INMIGRACIÓN DE FLIC [9].
A medida que empeora la crisis climática, debemos conectar la lucha
nacional para expandir el TPS para incluir a los refugiados climáticos
existentes y nuevos como parte de una práctica reparadora y de
responsabilización de los EE. UU., un líder mundial en contaminación por
carbono.
Bangladesh es uno de los países más vulnerables al clima del mundo,
produce solo la mitad del uno por ciento de las emisiones globales, pero
ocupa el séptimo lugar en el mundo más afectado por el cambio climático.

los derechos de los trabajadores, exigiendo reparaciones climáticas y
resistiendo la migración forzada.
