Dear John,
After the Republicans’ poor performance in the midterm elections, it looked like Donald Trump was in serious political trouble. Now, six months later, he’s dominating the Republican primary polls while leaning harder than ever into a message of authoritarianism and white supremacy.
Friends, Donald Trump is as dangerous right now as he’s ever been, and we cannot underestimate him again, as we did in 2016.
To help figure out a plan to counter this threat, the team at Inequality Media Civic Action analyzed how Trump has managed to continue to gather support even while getting indicted and losing the support of important right-wing media outlets like Fox News.
One of the keys we discovered is that he’s dominating the other Republican candidates — as well as Democrats — on social media. Check it out:
- Since the start of 2023, Trump has spent twice as much for ads on Facebook, Instagram, Google, and YouTube as all other likely or confirmed 2024 GOP presidential candidates.
- His videos have garnered twice as many views on Facebook as any other major political figure, Republican or Democratic.
- Meanwhile, his access to YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook have all been fully restored, once again giving him direct access to tens of millions of followers.
Inequality Media Civic Action is one of the only progressive groups with the reach and expertise to go toe-to-toe with Trump and the right wing on social media, including promoting content tested to do well with the full range of voters, but we can’t sit back and wait for the election year to start fighting back. The campaign starts now, and we rely on donations from small donors to power everything we do.
Will you make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action and help us break through on social media to fight back against Donald Trump?
Social media has always been a key part of Donald Trump’s political machine. He used Twitter as a personal megaphone that drove the daily news cycle every day for months on end. Election experts called Facebook his “secret weapon” in 2016, when he worked directly with Facebook’s internal staff to master the platform algorithms and supercharge his posts.
Meanwhile, Democratic candidates have consistently lagged far behind, never coming close to the number of followers or levels of engagement that Trump and other far-right copycats, aka “MAGA mills,” have routinely gotten.
Inequality Media Civic Action recognized this deficit long ago, and we’ve spent years working to build an audience large enough to make sure millions see content that counters Trump’s lies and blunts the power of his message, not just on older platforms like Facebook and YouTube, but the newer, fast-growing apps like TikTok and Snapchat. We’ve used the same cutting-edge tools that corporate advertisers use to test content and instantly expand and redeploy the most effective messages.
Our work was critical in 2022, alerting voters about the election deniers who ran for secretary of state and other key positions overseeing elections. But for 2024, with Donald Trump once again running for president and leading in the polls among Republican primary voters, we need to go even bigger, starting right now.
Friends, Donald Trump is more dangerous than ever. We’re leading a critical effort to fight back on social media, where his message of hate spreads fastest. Will you make a donation today and help us get out the truth and stop Donald Trump from ever becoming president of the United States again?
In solidarity and with deep gratitude,
Robert Reich
