Sudan Solidarity Message from MCN’s Spring 2023 Policy Intern, Lamis Idris.

Assalamu Alaykum and Greetings,

As many of you know, there is currently a civil war impacting our Muslim brothers and sisters in Sudan. As a first-generation Sudanese American, my parents immigrated to the U.S. in 1994 amidst economic instability in Sudan. They came to provide my siblings and me with a better life than they had. Their struggles have motivated me to dedicate my life to social justice causes and advocate for the Sudanese people. 

Today I write to plead for your help and raise awareness of the ongoing conflict that is impacting my family and hundreds of thousands of our Muslim brothers and sisters in Sudan.

On April 15th, 2023, Sudanese families living in Khartoum and other major cities in Sudan woke up to intense gunfire, and booms of battle. Since then, the violence hasn't stopped. Over 400 people have died, and more than 3,700 injured. The electricity and water systems are down, and 70% of hospitals are destroyed and out of oxygen. Food and medical care are scarce, the streets are filled with corpses and people are unable to relocate. 

The violence, which started due to power struggles between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Army, continued through Eid Al Fitr when people are supposed to be in the spirit of joy and celebration.
I ask you to please pray for Sudan, donate to organizations on the ground, and call on the U.N, U.S and African reps to take action!
