This past week has been filled with strategy sessions with our in-state partners, planning for constituency caucuses' elections, working on data improvements, hosting orientations for the IDP Chair Ambassador program, meeting with folks like the IDP District Chairs, and fundraising efforts (as always!). Oh, yes, and talking to reporters about Republicans' ridiculous attempts to tell Democrats how we should run our caucuses.
I am very encouraged by the number of folks who have reached out to help with fundraising, organizing, data management, recruitment, communications, etc. If you have a skill you'd like to share, send us an email at [email protected], or give me a call at 563-210-1252.
I am also pleasantly surprised and touched by the number of hand-written letters, emails, and messages I've received along with many in-person and telephone conversations I have had this week. The common thread I've heard from everyone is that this party is going to do better.
Teddy Roosevelt's paraphrased saying "Nothing worthwhile comes about without hard work" absolutely fits our present situation, and we all understand that. Electing Democrats to save the democratic process here in Iowa is definitely going to be hard work, but I truly believe that nothing is more worthwhile.
Meanwhile, Republican legislators at the Iowa Statehouse turned democracy on its head this week when they made a political decision to refuse to answer questions during debate. I guess it doesn't occur to these Republican officials (who swore an oath to uphold the democratic process for their constituents) to actually understand the legislation they intend to pass.
Send your Democratic senators and representatives a message of encouragement during these final days of the session. They need it and deserve it.
Yours,
Rita Hart
