Dear Comrade,
The events of the past week have been devastating. We did not expect to receive good news from the grand jury, but we still hoped to see that there would be repercussions on the cops who shot Jayland Walker. You can read our full statement here. Unfortunately the police violence is not over; the police incited violence on Wednesday (4/19), deploying tear gas on the community, including babies and the elderly. On Friday (4/21), we got the great news that the Akron Bail Fund got a 14 day injunction on the police use of tear gas, flash bangs, and more. We need to make this permanent, and this is where we need YOUR help!
Please follow this link to email Akron City Council and let them know they must permanently ban the use of weapons of war against civilians by expanding section 35.17 of the municipal code, “Prohibited public safety practices.” Tear gas is banned in war, but the police use it freely within our borders.
We are also asking you to sign up for tonight's public comment for Akron City Council to ask them to expand the Prohibited public safety practices. This link tells you how to sign up for public comment; you MUST get your form submitted by 4pm in order to speak. There is a strict 3-minute limit, and it will be over Zoom, as council has gone remote until further notice.
Solidarity!
