John, the Safer Seas and Rivers Service (SSRS) app not only keeps us safe from sewage-filled waters. It’s also our secret weapon to fight back.

Because water companies don’t want their customers to know exactly how much they’re failing. But with the SSRS, we can lift the lid on the truth:

Andy is an app user who lives in Exmouth. When he saw sewage running into the sea in the height of a dry summer last August, he didn’t hesitate to click the ‘contact your MP’ button in the app.

But Andy didn’t stop there. The app’s unbiased data also helped him hold his water company to account. He took it along to his local council meetings to prove that South West Water had misrepresented how many sewage dumps they were ‘permitted’ to make. It’s amazing what data can do.

If we want to keep up the pressure on water companies to clean up their act, and make sure power remains in your hands to take action, then we need to make sure the app is future-proof. 

This week we have the opportunity to ensure the app can carry on providing free, accurate and unbiased data for years to come.

If we don’t keep raising the alarm when sewage fills our seas, the government will keep turning a blind eye.

Whether they insist on focusing on good news stories, blame everything on wet wipes, or totally ignore how sick sewage is making people – right now, the people in power that are supposed to protect us just aren’t doing enough. And Andy’s lacklustre response from his MP is proof of this.

That’s why the app needs to be fully-functioning. Whenever pollution is spotted, people should be able to easily report it. Whenever they’re sick, they should have a place to log their symptoms. It’s only through all this collective data that we can show the scale of this problem, and finally push for change.
