Dear John,

This week, in preparation for the South Korean President’s visit, I sent a letter to President Yoon welcoming him to the U.S. and encouraging his work to strengthen relations with Japan. I also spoke on the House floor to urge Vietnam to release its political prisoners and journalists who have been jailed for speaking out against the Communist government.

When I am in D.C., I am privileged to meet with constituent groups like California State University Fullerton to hear how we can work together to support students. On Tax Day, I spoke on the House floor to speak out against the sky high spending that has only destroyed our economy and piled debt onto the backs of our children and grandchildren.

Get the details about all of this and more below, and make sure to follow my FacebookInstagram, and Twitter to get these updates in real-time.

Strengthening Our Vital Alliances

Image

This week I sent a letter to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol welcoming him to the United States, commending his ongoing work to improve relations between South Korea and Japan, and encouraging the continual strengthening of our friendship with Korea and Japan. My parents fled communism in North Korea to South Korea, where I was born. I grew up in Japan before immigrating to the U.S. with my family when I was 19 years old.

Both South Korea and Japan have a place in my heart and I am passionate about building our partnership, especially as the world faces unprecedented threats from North Korea, Russia, and the Chinese Communist Party. It is more important than ever to look past historical disputes and work together for global peace.

Rep. Steel Gives Remarks on Tax Day 2023

Tax Day marks the deadline for over 200 million Americans to file their taxes. Over the past year, responsible, hardworking families across the nation created a budget, sacrificed to stick to that budget, and paid what they must by law to the government. Meanwhile, their government spent taxpayer dollars recklessly, resulting in a national deficit of over $31 trillion...

I had a great meeting with representatives from California State University Fullerton, including President Virjee, to discuss how we can work together to support students and educators in our community. Thanks for coming all the way to D.C.!

Honoring the AAPI Community

Image

From business leaders and educators to healthcare professionals and community service providers, the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in Southern California is as remarkable and impactful as it is diverse. We are fortunate to have such dedicated and talented friends and neighbors in our area.

In anticipation of AAPI Heritage Month in May, my office is asking for your help to honor some of these incredible individuals as distinguished citizens with our 2023 AAPI of Distinction Award.

Visit my website to nominate a member of the AAPI community who lives or works in the 45th Congressional District and has made a significant contribution to our community. I look forward to working with you to honor the amazing AAPI Community!

Supporting Our Police

Image

Our police officers put their lives on the line every day to protect their communities. The least we can do is ensure they have a safe, functioning workplace.

That is why I teamed up with Rep. Lou Correa (D-CA) to request $2.5 million in federal funds to restore the Fullerton Police Station by removing lead paint and asbestos, fixing the unusable locker rooms, and refurbishing the beautiful exterior architecture.

I am proud to work with Rep. Correa in bipartisanship to serve the city of Fullerton!

Rep. Steel Calls on Vietnamese Government to Release Political Prisoners

I spoke on the House floor to call attention to the Communist government of Vietnam's recent sentencing of Nguyen Lan Thang to six years in prison for documenting protests and human rights abuses. I have and will continue to call out the Communist Party of Vietnam for imprisoning journalists, human rights defenders, religious figures, and dissidents in Vietnam.

What I'm Reading

Orange County Register: Tax tips for CaliforniansImage

"If you scan headlines this week, the words “tax deadline” are surely getting attention. For many across the U.S., the filing deadline for federal returns is Tuesday, April 18. In all but three counties in California, that deadline is Oct. 16, thanks to storm-related declarations by the federal government. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know…"

Wall Street Journal: Chinese Communist Police in New YorkImage

"The U.S. can’t stop the Communist Party from stifling free speech in China, but it can protect against China extending its tyranny to America. That’s the importance of Monday’s little-noticed charges against Chinese in the U.S. and China for harassing and intimidating Chinese nationals living in the U.S."
