John,
For months, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and his fellow House Republicans have held the country’s economy hostage over a set of right-wing priorities he has refused to reveal. This week, McCarthy finally told us what he’s demanding in exchange for raising the country’s debt limit and it’s even worse than we could have imagined.
In addition to across-the-board budget cuts impacting the Social Security Administration, housing, education, and more, McCarthy wants to impose even more stringent work requirements on low-income people receiving Medicaid and SNAP food benefits. But that’s not all!
McCarthy wants to eliminate IRS funding targeting wealthy and corporate tax cheats. And he wants to roll back environmental protections meant to protect front-line communities from greedy fossil fuel corporations.
While the speaker is hoping to hold a vote next week, it’s unclear whether he has the votes to succeed. McCarthy can only afford to lose 4 Republican votes, assuming Democrats are unanimous in opposing the bill. And, there are 16 Republicans in the House who have never voted to increase the debt ceiling.
Together, we’re letting voters know what’s in Kevin McCarthy’s bad deal—in comparison to President Biden’s bold plan to raise taxes on the rich and corporations and invest in our future.

As McCarthy works furiously to line up the votes in his own caucus, it’s likely that this bill will get worse, not better, in the coming days as right-wing ideologues inflict even more harm on people with low incomes.
