Welcome to Monday, February 3rd, 49ers and Chiefs...

After months of witnesses (or not) and volumes of testimony and piles of tweets, it's time for Congress to decide:

PIC-I

On Friday, Senators reached an agreement on the next steps in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump after Republicans voted to block a motion to call additional witnesses.

Some Republicans conceded that Trump may have withheld Ukraine aid in exchange for investigations, but that this is not an impeachable offense.

"There is no need for more evidence to conclude that the president withheld United States aid, at least in part, to pressure Ukraine to investigate the Bidens; the House managers have proved this with what they call a 'mountain of overwhelming evidence,'" said Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), who was seen as a possible swing vote in calling witnesses. He continued:

"Our founding documents provide for duly elected presidents who serve with 'the consent of the governed,' not at the pleasure of the United States Congress. Let the people decide."

The Senate will reconvene at 11 a.m. EST today for a round of closing arguments by House managers and the president's counsel. This will be followed by a non-trial session that will allow senators to give speeches and explain their votes.

At 4 p.m. EST Wednesday, the impeachment trial will resume for a final vote on the conviction or acquittal of President Trump.

2020 Iowa Caucuses

The 2020 Iowa caucuses are here, and seven Democratic candidates are actively competing for the Hawkeye State.

PIC-O

That's Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT); former vice president Joe Biden; former South Bend, Ind., mayor Pete Buttigieg; Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA); Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN); entrepreneur Andrew Yang; and investor Tom Steyer.

The Iowa Democratic Party is “preparing for the biggest turnout in our modern caucus history,” said communications director Mandy McClure.

And yes, the Iowa Republican Party will also host a caucus on February 3. While President Trump is largely uncontested, he'll face two challengers: Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld and former U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh.

What's a caucus? Well, think of a neighborhood meeting where your friends and family express their presidential preferences and try to convince you to take their side.
