By every available metric, the southern border is in a state of chaos, and the Biden Administration is to blame. In response, Republicans running for Congress last year promised the American people to pass legislation in the House to address this national security, economic, and humanitarian crisis.
House Republicans advanced a key part of their border security mandate this week during a Judiciary Committee legislative markup of H.R. 2640, The Border Security and Enforcement Act.
This bill includes important provision that would:
- Combat asylum fraud by reforming what can be considered a proper claim to asylum,
- End parole abuse
- Stop the smuggling and exploitation of children who are trafficked across the border by cartels
- Mandate e-verify as a method of verifying the citizenship status of potential employees.
Next week, the Homeland Security Committee will hold a similar legislative markup to advance additional legislative provisions to secure the border (each committee—Judiciary and Homeland Security—has jurisdiction over separate areas of law. The work of both committees is needed to pass a robust border security package in the House).
When the policies from these two committees are combined into a single robust bill and passed, Republicans in the House will have demonstrated a true commitment to securing America’s border.
America’s grassroots truly have the power to hold Congress accountable. Passing a robust border security bill in the House would be further proof of the power your voice has.
