Two moments late this week unfolded at the Supreme Court and Congress that could have critical impact on our right to access abortion care and for the rights of trans kids nationwide.

We've said it once and we'll say it again: These are not isolated fights. This is a direct and coordinated attack on everyone's bodily autonomy and the personal freedoms in this country that make up our democracy.

Because of this, our email today is a little longer than our usual. But we want you to have the full rundown of these critically important issues – and what we're doing to fight back. Know we at the ACLU will always fight for the rights of all people to be included in our society. We will always fight for your right to make decisions that are right for your body, health, and future. Count on it.

Here's what happened today in abortion access at the Supreme Court:

Today, the Supreme Court granted a request from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Danco to stay a decision that severely restricted the use of mifepristone – a medication used in most abortions in this country. While this is welcome news, it’s frightening to think that Americans came within hours of losing access to a medication that is used in most abortions in this country and has been used for decades by millions of people to safely end a pregnancy or treat a miscarriage.

Here's what we're doing:

We've filed more than a dozen lawsuits and counting to keep clinics open nationwide while also working to protect access to medication abortion alongside our partners, mobilizing our united communities to speak out and demand more from our courts. And at the same time, we're helping people facing legal challenges related to providing, assisting, or seeking abortion care through our Abortion Criminal Defense Initiative.

Here's what happened Thursday in trans rights at Congress:

Amid a national wave of state bills targeting the safety, dignity, and equality of transgender people, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 734, a bill that would deny transgender girls nationwide equal and fair participation in student athletics. Instead of governing responsibly, solving the debt limit, and passing legislation that the American people actually want and need, this House majority is legislating discrimination and hate towards school children. This is in addition to the over 450 bills attacking the rights of transgender people that have been introduced in state legislatures nationwide this year.

Here's what we're doing to fight back:

We're challenging bans on trans student athletes in Idaho, Tennessee, and West Virginia. And earlier this month, we saw a win at the Supreme Court when the Court rejected an effort by West Virginia to enforce its ban against a 12-year-old transgender girl. We are also challenging seven newly passed bans on gender-affirming care access for trans young people in Georgia, Indiana, Idaho, Montana, Oklahoma, Utah, and our latest filing this week in Tennessee.

We know this fight can be overwhelming, ACLU Supporter, but we'll be clear that we at the ACLU, our nationwide affiliate network, and dedicated coalition partners are here alongside you and are never giving up.
