Dear Friend,

April is a busy month for us! April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month ([link removed]) and we have been active in our community spreading awareness and education around sexual violence issues. The theme of Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2023 is “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity.” This April's campaign calls on all individuals, communities, organizations, and institutions to change ourselves and the systems surrounding us to build racial equity and respect. This ties right in with Denim Day this year and our themes of protecting each other, allyship, and being upstanders. We hope that you are all gearing up and getting ready for Denim Day ([link removed]) next week. See below for more Denim Day information and activities. April is also Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month ([link removed]) which recognizes the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect. We
know that violences and all forms of social harm are interconnected. To truly make lasting impact, we must connect the dots and work together toward a shared goal of a world free from violence. Thank you for joining with us in this work!

** Denim Day is next week! 👖 4/26 👖
------------------------------------------------------------
This year we are celebrating 24 years of Denim Day! Denim Day is all about spreading awareness around sexual violence issues, supporting survivors, and educating ourselves and others. This year's themes are Let's Protect Each Other, Be An Ally, and Be An Upstander.

Let’s protect each other. Let’s protect ourselves and each other, support one another and create a better and safer world. Be an upstander. Stand up and take action safely. If you see something, say something, do something. Be an ally. Join together in the movement to end violence. Sexual violence is intersectional; we must recognize and acknowledge the interconnectedness of so many violences, along with social justice and public health issues.

Join the Denim Day movement and get involved today. Learn more, donate to support, and plan your own activities! We love seeing Denim Days all over the world - please contact us and let us know what you are doing, send us pictures, and continue to educate and activate. Email us at [email protected].

** Volunteer Appreciation Month!
------------------------------------------------------------
Volunteers are a critical part of POV. They provide a different type of support to survivors that highlights the care and comfort that is valued over at POV. Many of our volunteers are survivors themselves and have been able to utilize the services POV has to offer and continue their healing journey by extending their care and knowledge to other survivors of trauma. It is truly a pleasure to honor our volunteers.
— Shirley LaBrie, Volunteer Engagement & Hotline Supervisor

A few quotes from our recent Counselor Advocate graduates:

Moya Z.: “Volunteering with POV has made me realize the importance of empowerment. I haven't been on the hotline for long, but it's really amazing to hear people say "Wow, I didn't know that" because that means they've learned something new or "Thank you for saying that" or "I think what you're saying makes sense" like somehow by just providing survivors with education and validation, that's enough. I always defaulted to trying to fix other people's problems, but I've realized that sometimes that's not necessary.

I would say to my past self that it's ok there's no pressure when you're answering calls. It's ok to not know what to say, and sometimes you don't have to say anything at all. Before POV, I hated talking on the phone because it was so anxiety-inducing, but this experience has definitely made me more comfortable communicating with other people. I will definitely be applying the skills I've learned in the future on my road to becoming a healthcare professional.”

Joanna K.: "I have met some of the coolest people yet. From knowledgeable instructors to volunteers that will be friends for a lifetime. I have learned to be a better communicator not only as a volunteer, but in everyday life. My volunteer experience is something I will bring with me for years to come.

By Noah Goldberg, LA Times

A bill is being proposed in the state Assembly of California that would allow victims of human trafficking or domestic violence who allegedly committed violent crimes to present evidence of their abuse as an affirmative defense at criminal trials. The bill would also allow survivors to use their evidence of abuse after being convicted of violent crimes to petition to have their cases vacated.

** "Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields" 2-Part Documentary Series is ABC News' Most Watched Hulu Debut Ever ([link removed])

Described as a “galvanizing look at actor, model and icon Brooke Shields as she transforms from a sexualized young girl to a woman discovering her power,” the two-part doc debuted April 3 on Hulu, following its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. “Holding a mirror up to a society that objectifies women and girls, her story shows the perils and triumphs of gaining agency in a hostile world.”
