April 2023: Congressional Update
Dear friend,
Last week, I wrote an op-ed published in the StarTribune about the need to revive and expand the expired federal Child Tax Credit, and praise Minnesota's own Child Tax Credit proposal led by Governor Tim Walz. The expanded Child Tax Credit proposal would benefit families earning less than $50,000, and would give them $1,000 per child through the state, regardless of their tax liability. You can read the full op-ed here.
I was also profiled in the Associated Press on my growing leadership role in the House Democratic Caucus and my work with the Biden Administration. You can read the article here.
Join Our In-Person Town Hall
On May 2nd at 6pm CT, I will be hosting an in-person town hall at Edison High School. I can’t wait to answer your questions. You can RSVP here.
Ending Child Poverty
I reintroduced the End Child Poverty Act with Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Rep. Chuy García which would cut child poverty by nearly two-thirds. It is exactly the type of bold action our party should be championing to finally address child poverty in this country and make sure families aren’t going hungry in one of the wealthiest countries in the world. You can read more here.
President Biden’s Visit to Minnesota
It was incredible to welcome President Biden to the Cummins Power Generation Facility in Fridley. This was part of his “Investing in America Tour” to highlight the investments his administration is making to address the climate crisis right here in Minnesota. You can read my statement on the visit here.
Housing is a Human Right
This month, I had the opportunity to visit the Simpson Community Shelter and Apartments to celebrate the $2.5 million our office was able to secure through Community Project Funding. This funding will help provide safe housing and resources for those experiencing homelessness. You can watch a recap video of my visit here.
Northrup King Artspace Campus Visit
I visited the Northrup King Building, which is home to more than 400 artists. ArtSpace arranged for us to meet with some of the folks who have studios there. We also saw the space where 85 units of affordable housing will be built later this year, thanks to the mission of Artspace, which is to create, foster, and preserve affordable and sustainable space for artists and arts organizations. We discussed resources our District Office can provide to constituents.
In service,
Ilhan Omar
