Friend, We're just over 100 days in to our House Republican Majority – I'm proud of what we've accomplished so far, but we are just getting started. From voting to defund President Biden's 87,000 new IRS agents, advocating for a strong 2023 Farm Bill, and working to compete with China as a Member of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, I will always champion Iowans' priorities in Washington. I've already been to every county in the district at least once on our first 22 County Tour of the year, and our second tour is underway! We've held three in-person town hall meetings, met with folks of all walks of life, and have come directly to Iowans to hear about their most important issues. 100 days of results down – the best is yet to come! Best, House Appropriations Committee Highlights As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I'm working to cut wasteful spending, hold Biden Administration officials accountable, and bring investments home to Iowa. Watch some key highlights from our hearings this week. Hearing with ICE Director Tae Johnson Our open Southern Border is being exploited by criminals, traffickers, and even the Chinese Communist Party. This week, I asked Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tae Johnson to step up their communication with local law enforcement and deport those who are here illegally. The days of lax immigration enforcement must come to an end. Watch my first line of questioning here, and my second line of questioning here. Hearing with FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell Iowa is at a disadvantage for certain federal grants because of bureaucratic regulations – an issue I’ve heard about from local and state agencies. This week, I asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Deanne Criswell to commit to eliminating onerous requirements that hurt Iowa. Watch my first line of questioning here, and my second line of questioning here. Hearing with USCG Commandant Admiral Linda Fagan Dubuque hosts the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG)'s Cutter Wyaconda and it's a priority for me to ensure the Mississippi River is protected and maintained as an essential part of the regional economy and supply chains nationwide. During the hearing with USCG Commandant Admiral Linda Fagan, I asked how the funding requested by the USCG will be used to ensure the Mississippi is stable and secure. Watch my questioning here. Hearing with CBP Acting Commissioner Troy Miller Last year, a suspected terrorist crossed the Southern Border and was able to stay in the US for two weeks before being picked up by ICE. This week, I asked US Customs and Border Protection Acting Commissioner Troy Miller about the letter, but didn't get a straight answer. This is unacceptable – we must keep our communities safe and secure our border. Watch my first line of questioning here, and my second line of questioning here. Protecting Girls' Sports This week, I proudly voted for the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. This bill protects girls' sports for girls, and ensures girls aren't forced to compete against biological boys. Over 50 years ago, Title IX was enacted to help increase opportunities for girls in athletics, and it worked. Since it's enactment, participation in female sports has increased over 1,000% at the high school level and over 600% at the post-secondary level. Title IX changed the game for women’s sports but, now in 2023, this progress is at risk. Biological boys should not be able to compete against biological girls in sports – that’s just Iowa common sense. Iowa 4-H I had a great time meeting with Iowa 4-H members in DC this week, and discussing how “head, heart, hands, and health” have had a profound impact on them and so many young Iowans. Iowa National Guard I had a great meeting with the new Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard, Brigadier General Stephen Osborn in Washington, DC this week. The Iowa National Guard stands ready to protect Iowans in the face of any disaster – thank you for your service! Grundy County Memorial Hospital I met with the team at Grundy County Memorial Hospital last week to see their new expansion project and discuss increasing rural health care access. I appreciate their dedication to ensuring all Iowans have access to quality health care, including through tele-health, and I’ll continue doing everything I can at the federal level to expand access to affordable, quality care. Hardin County EMA Training Simulation Our law enforcement and first responders run toward danger to protect us. Last week, I joined law enforcement and members of the Hardin County Emergency Management Agency for a training simulation and discussion on the challenges facing law enforcement. I will always back the blue and support those who keep us safe! Community Highlights My team attended the ribbon cutting for the annex at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids this week. Let's go Kernels! My team joined Statera Integrated Health and Wellness Solutions to celebrate their five years of keeping the Dubuque community healthy by providing a variety of holistic services. Congratulations!
