This Earth Day, Get to know the Green New Deal Alexandria just reintroduced the Green New Deal resolution in Congress! The Green New Deal is our solution for addressing climate change and increasing economic security for working families and other communities that have been left behind. Our focused is on ending our reliance on fossil fiels and eliminating carbon emissions while creating at least 10 million high-wage, union jobs. A resolution, not a bill The GND has 5 main goals: Achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, create millions of high wage jobs and ensure prosperity and ecomomic security, invest in the American infrastructure and industry to meet the needs of the 21st century, ensure clean air and water, healthy food, access to nature, and a sustainable environment for all, create just and equitable social and economic systems that care for our frontline and vulnerable communities. When the GND was first introduced four years ago, it was called 'unrealistic.' But since then, we've made a lot of progress: Last year, Congress made the biggest federal investment ever – $369 billion — to fight climate change through the Inflation Reduction Act. AOC and Senator Markey developed a Green New Deal Implementation Guide to help show communities and organizers how to get federan money for GND investments. We secured another $100 million for 60 different local Green New Deal projects, stretching from Hawaii to Vermont. Our allies in Congress introduced 12 companion bills that apply the GND principles of jobs, justice, and climate to everything from agriculture to electric vehicles. Last Congress, more than half of Democrats sponsored a GND bill. In NY-14, this includes funding for the Coastal Preservation Network to stabilize waterfront access platforms on Flushing Bay, and funding for SUNY Martime College's job training programs in offshore wind.
