The Most Serious Threat To The Country

WG Economy | David Winston

April 19, 2023

The debt limit standoff between the White House and Republicans is not only over philosophies on government spending but also about different views on the most serious threats to the country. Given the nation's escalating debt, Republicans are looking for areas to cut, particularly in Democratic spending from the last two years that they say has made inflation worse. Democrats want to increase spending on what they define as public investment to address the "climate crisis," with last year's Inflation Reduction Act being described as "the most significant climate legislation in US history." Republicans line up against replacing Feinstein on critical committee

It would take at least 10 GOP votes to let Democrats replace the ailing Californian on the pivotal Judiciary panel - a mark that's effectively out of reach.

Politico | Burgess Everett and Katherine Tully-McManus

April 17, 2023

Senate Republicans are preparing to stop a temporary replacement for the ailing Dianne Feinstein on the Judiciary Committee this week, a move with significant ramifications for Democrats' ability to confirm federal judges.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday afternoon that he wants to quickly sub in another senator for Feinstein (D-Calif.), whose absence from the Judiciary panel is hampering Democrats' ability to easily confirm more of President Joe Biden's nominees to the federal bench. But just one Republican can object to executing that move quickly, and the GOP opposition is overflowing. Read more

Persistent Inflation And The Return Of High Gas Prices

WG Discussion Points | David Winston

April 14, 2023

This week's new inflation report showed some slowing of the Consumer Price Index measuring inflation (5% year over year) which the White House is describing as "breathing room." But as Democratic economist Jason Furman pointed out, inflation is proving to be "stubbornly persistent," a phenomenon that has many economists perplexed.

Gas prices have been the aspect of inflation that the Biden administration has claimed as a success, with some declines in price last fall. From the recent survey for Winning the Issues (March 1-3), voters are inclined to believe the President's State of the Union statement that gas prices are down over $1.50 from their peak (47-39 believe-do not believe), but not that gas prices are comparable to what they were when President Biden took office (32-52 believe-do not believe).
