Dear John,
Plans are underway in Washington, DC to create a so-called “commission” to review the Social Security Trust Funds. As the National Committee’s senior legislative representative Maria Freese pointed out, “commissions, by nature, are designed to cut Social Security and Medicare.”
In fact, House Rules Committee Chair Tom Cole (OK-04) reintroduced the “Bipartisan Social Security Commission Act” which would set up a 13-member commission to provide Congress with recommendations on improving Social Security. Of course, this commission would have the power to fast track proposals through Congress — proposals that would likely include raising the retirement age, slashing the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) and privatizing the program for the benefit of Wall Street brokers.
With so much on the line, please join with other seniors from your area by SIGNING OUR URGENT PETITION TO CONGRESS TODAY! We need to put every member of Congress on notice that seniors will not stand idly by as politicians who support benefit cuts try to take political cover behind a “Social Security Commission.”
The National Committee supports legislation in Congress that would strengthen — not cut — Social Security by requiring millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share into the program. Currently high-income earners stop paying into the program when they reach the $160,200 income threshold — which is starving the program of critical revenue.
The fact is, Congress listens to us because they listen to you. So please add your name right now to our urgent Petition to Congress.
Sincerely,
|
