First 100 Days Review
Friend,
Washington is still a mess, but I’ve spent the first 100 days of this year working to improve it. I’m working to bring transparency and accountability back to Washington. The House is open. Our government is more accountable. Transparency is being restored. My top priorities are creating a government that’s accountable, bringing down costs, and keeping our communities safe.
Washington’s spending has gone unchecked for too long, but that has begun to change. Congress is finally focused on how we can stop Washington’s reckless spending and reduce costs for families. The Limit, Save, and Grow Act, legislation that will responsibly lift the debt ceiling into the next year and limit federal spending, was introduced this week. This legislation is a responsible and reasonable approach to save taxpayers trillions of dollars and grow the economy.
High energy prices are costing families money and driving inflation. The House has passed legislation to lower energy costs. The Lower Energy Costs Act would promote an all of the above energy approach and unleash American energy. We cannot continue to watch gas prices climb without finding solutions here at home to address high costs. Unfortunately the Senate has not moved on this legislation. I’ll continue to work to promote an all of the above energy approach.
I have made a commitment to support parents and protect our children’s mental health. The House has passed the Parents Bill of Rights. Legislation to increase transparency for parents in their child’s education. The legislation centers on five key rights for parents: the right to know what’s being taught in schools and to see reading material, the right to be heard, the right to see school budgets and spending, the right to protect their child’s privacy, and the right to be updated on any violent activity at school. These are common sense provisions to ensure every parent has access into their child’s education.
Americans deserve transparency and accountability in their federal government. After all, as Members of Congress elected by the people, it is our duty to be accountable TO the people. Yet for too long, standard practices in Washington have been absent.
In my position as Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, I’m focusing on restoring normalcy in Congress, bringing this institution into the 21st century, and protecting Americans’ hard-earned tax dollars. The Capitol is now fully reopened. I believe each American has the right to petition their government. I’m committed to ensuring the Capitol remains open and accessible to the American people.
This year, we ended proxy voting. Every Member of Congress should be showing up to work in person, as every worker does across Wisconsin each day. Last year, I was one of only 4 Members of Congress that showed up to every vote. That’s unacceptable. We have ended pandemic restrictions in the Capitol to ensure every Member of Congress is showing up to work. Washington has begun returning to normal in the last 100 days.
The dysfunction in Washington has frustrated me, and countless Americans, for too long. The good news is that progress is being made in the House. Steps taken in the first 100 days to restore accountability and transparency in Washington are proving to be successful. There is much more work to be done.
As always, feel welcome to contact my office to share your opinion on the legislation coming before Congress. If you are having difficulty working with a federal agency, don't hesitate to contact my office for help.
On Wisconsin,
Bryan Steil Member of Congress
