John —
Ever since House Republicans took 15 ballots to elect Kevin McCarthy as their speaker in January, we’ve been waiting to see exactly what price they’d demand in return for not blowing up the economy through defaulting on the federal debt.
Well, this week, we found out.
Kevin McCarthy just released a 320-page bill that even beltway media is calling “politically explosive” for Republicans.1 They are officially going after:
-
People who rely on Medicaid: They want to add onerous work requirements and slash the safety net for families that need it the most,
-
People who rely on food assistance: They want to make massive cuts and add more restrictions to people who rely on food assistance programs to feed their families,
-
Students and young people: They want to block Biden’s student loan forgiveness plans entirely and repeal parts of the Inflation Reduction Act that made it the boldest climate legislation in decades,
-
And everyone else who isn’t ultra-wealthy: They want to slash all funding levels for federal agencies — except for the Pentagon, of course — which would mean hundreds of thousands of families losing their childcare, education, and housing assistance.2
With a vote scheduled on McCarthy’s bill for next week, and the Republican threat to default looming just weeks away, we have to make sure that vulnerable incumbents feel the heat now.
That’s why WFP and our members are holding Republicans’ feet to the fire in key districts — and putting in the work that we know is needed to take back the House in 2024 with a working families majority. Can you chip in with a grassroots contribution of $10 or more to help keep up this pressure?

We know the MAGA agenda of tax cuts for the wealthy and cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and food assistance for the rest of us is toxic.
That's why WFP members have been out in force this spring in battleground districts, pressing newly elected Republican members of Congress on these issues and winning local and national media coverage in the process.
Your grassroots contributions will help make sure that vulnerable House Republicans aren’t able to run away from this agenda in 2024.
In solidarity,
Team WFP
