#LowcountryFirst Pass In Review | April 21, 2023 Protecting Women in Sports Hello and happy Friday! It was a busy week here in Washington D.C. - we’ve been up to a lot so we’re here to fill you in! This week we reintroduced the bipartisan V.A. Flood Preparedness Act with Rep. Troy Carter of Louisiana. Here at our local Ralph H. Johnson Medical Center, our veterans are often impeded from entering the center due to flooding in and around the area. This bill will increase collaboration between local government and the V.A. - so the V.A. can participate in and make specific contributions to local government to mitigate the risk of flooding on roads adjacent to their facilities. Read more here. Big win! Our Riley Gaines Amendment was PASSED this week. Only biological women belong in women's sports, and we will not stop standing up for the right to fair competition. It was astonishing to see how many people voted against this Amendment after women have fought so hard for their equality over the years. As a mother, I cannot imagine my daughter having to compete with a male or share a locker room with one either. No one is in on this. You can read about the Amendment here. Over a year ago, the American withdrawal from Afghanistan was completely botched. This week the Oversight Committee held a hearing - watch here. Thousands of people’s sensitive data on DC Health Link Exchange were breached recently - and their personal data was sold on the dark web. To watch the full hearing, look here. We’ve been a strong voice over the past few weeks about finding common ground on women’s issues. We have a portfolio of bills to help protect the right to life, and women’s rights at the same time. Exceptions matter - rape, life of the mother, incest. If we are going to ban abortion, we have to also ensure women have the right to contraception - birth control, etc. and then what will we do to care for the unwanted children when they are born? How do we improve adoption and foster care? How do we improve prenatal care and child care? More from the Washington Journal here. While we may not all have the same outlook on specific issues, we have to find a middle ground. It’s the time of year again - calling all high school students from SC-01 to submit their artwork for the Congressional Art Competition before the May 8, 2023 deadline. Please note only electronic submissions will be accepted. Our office has received a tremendous response from students in the past and we anticipate receiving even more submissions this year. If your student is interested please look here for more information. Just as a reminder - we have started a new series on our social media platforms highlighting beautiful sunsets all over the Lowcountry. If you would like to submit your photo, look here. We hold events all over the Lowcountry, and look forward to holding our next one soon. Stay subscribed to our newsletter to hear more or follow our Eventbrite page by clicking here. As always, our office is here to lend a hand whenever we can. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns or want to be heard on any issue at any time. We’re here to help. It’s an immense honor to serve each and every one of you. Have a great weekend! Sincerely, Congresswoman Nancy Mace Visit My Website DISTRICT DOG OF THE WEEK 🐶This week’s #DistrictDog is Zeus!
