John,
The San Carlos Apache Tribe in Arizona have held ceremonies at Oak Flat for hundreds if not thousands of years. These ceremonies are still being held today by the Tribe and the area should be protected.
However, the Trump administration fast-tracked a mining operation that would destroy Oak Flat, and President Biden’s Secretary of Agriculture is preparing to release the Final Environmental Impact Statement, which would be the last step in handing over this sacred land to a notorious foreign mining company.
While Secretary Vilsack is expected to release the Environmental Impact Statement at any time, this fight is not over!
Add your name to demand Secretary Vilsack protect Oak Flat for current and future generations.
San Carlos Apache Tribe Chairman Terry Rambler said that “obliterating Oak Flat for a copper mine will be a grave human rights violation against Indigenous people and an environmental catastrophe.”
The transfer of this Native land to Rio Tinto Resolution Copper Mining would destroy the entire area, deplete and poison already limited water supplies, and forever destroy the culture and religion of the San Carlos Apache people -- all for corporate greed to export copper to other countries.
Sign now to demand Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack withhold the Final Environmental Impact Statement and protect Oak Flat for generations to come.
Thank you for taking action today,
Rashida
