I’ve been fighting for working families, for our democracy, and for truth
and justice long before Donald Trump entered the political arena,
John.

It can be hard to remember a time before Trump dominated the news. Before
his MAGA agenda was the only playbook for Republican candidates. Before
the embarrassment and shame Trump brought to our country.

But just a few years ago, when our former president was a reality TV star,
not a politician, I was still standing up for our shared values against
Republicans’ out-of-touch policies and a harmful agenda led by folks like
Paul Ryan, John Boehner, and yes, Kevin McCarthy.

Like Republicans’ repeated attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. I
was there to vote against each and every effort to overturn the ACA.
Voting HELL NO.

Or their continued threats to make cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
They’re still trying to get away with this — and I’m ready to hold the
line against them.

Or their push for partisan investigations and conspiracy theories for
years. (Remember Benghazi?) On the House Intelligence Committee, I worked
to keep our country safe. Before Kevin McCarthy removed me from it for
holding Trump and his allies accountable.

Or their desire to unravel our democracy and take away reproductive
rights. That’s always been in the Republican playbook.

Whether it was an agenda led by Donald Trump or another Republican, I’ve
been on the frontlines of these fights in Congress for years — and I’ll
continue to take on these fights in the Senate. That’s what Californians
expect from their next Senator.

Because John, whether the former president continues to stay in
politics forever or not, these harmful ideas remain. They’re embedded deep
in the core philosophy of far too many Republican leaders in the Senate,
the House, and across our country.

Even Trump’s opponents in the Republican presidential primary cannot
separate their views from the former president’s. The hateful rhetoric,
the unwillingness to extend a helping hand to those in need, the
indebtedness to corporations and the ultra-rich.

We need proven fighters in the Senate, willing and able to stand up to
Republicans. Because you and I both know that regardless of whether Trump
is in office, the GOP is emboldened to act on a broad range of harmful
policies.
