Tell the Dairy Industry to Do More to Protect Cows from Barn Fires

Dear John,

Last week, a deadly fire happened at South Fork Dairy--a massive dairy factory farm in Dimmitt, Texas--killing an astounding 18,000 cows. This is the deadliest fire involving cattle since AWI first began tracking these incidents a decade ago. While it is common for fires on large industrial poultry operations to kill tens or even hundreds of thousands of animals at once, this incident shows that the dairy industry is also not immune from such tragedies.

More must be done to prevent fires and protect animals from such a gruesome death, including--as AWI has explicitly recommended to the industry--adoption of the National Fire Protection Association's fire prevention and suppression standards for animal housing facilities.

Going forward, it is crucial that the National Dairy FARM Program--the industry's lead auditing and certification program--learn from this horrific incident and require more from producers when it comes to fire mitigation, so that no dairy cow has to experience being burned alive.

TAKE ACTION ([link removed])

What You Can Do
Please urge the National Dairy FARM Program to strengthen its animal care standards ([link removed]) by requiring certified producers to implement effective fire prevention and suppression measures.

Sincerely,

Allie Granger
Policy Associate, Farmed Animal Program
