Kroger, America’s largest supermarket chain, needs to hear from you about its largest source of direct greenhouse gas emissions. The largest climate impacts of supermarkets come from the coolant gases used in their refrigerators called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). HFCs have thousands of times the warming capacity of carbon dioxide, and a typical supermarket consumes 4,000 pounds of refrigerants each year with a quarter leaking out due to faulty systems. Refrigerant leaks from US supermarkets emit 45 million metric tons of greenhouse gases every year (the equivalent of 9.5 million cars on the road). | | Currently, Kroger has only committed to replacing HFCs with climate-friendly refrigerants in 7 out of its 2,800 stores. At this rate, it would take Kroger hundreds of years to move off HFCs! The climate crisis is here, and we need Kroger to end HFCs in all facilities and stores by 2030 and immediately set a robust leak reduction goal for all its stores. |
