Dear Friends,

The First Church Worship Center had been a soup kitchen even before they started operating as a neighborhood food pantry in 1999. From there they grew the ways they support their Strawberry Mansion community to include a clothing closet, diaper provision, marriage counseling, and more. When COVID-19 shutdowns began, the First Church Worship Center was faced with unique challenges - watch this interview to hear their story and learn more about this longtime VIP partner!

Extra SNAP Has Ended - Share Your Story

We are teaming up with anti-hunger organizations across the state to collect stories from those who have been impacted by the loss of Emergency Allotments (the extra SNAP payments that people were getting to help with food costs during the pandemic). Hearing what people are going through will help make the case to state and federal legislators that SNAP benefits need to be increased. This is a critical opportunity to communicate to our elected officials about the importance of SNAP and why it should be expanded and strengthened. If you are a SNAP participant who experienced the loss of Emergency Allotments, consider sharing your story with us and joining the group of statewide anti-hunger advocates working to defend and strengthen SNAP.

In The Community

Our Education and Outreach team was busy this past week, hosting three separate hunger simulations for 6th graders at Penn Charter's Middle School, nutrition students at LaSalle University, and Residents at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Hunger simulations are interactive experiences designed to demonstrate the many barriers, challenges, and frustrations that people experiencing food insecurity face on a daily basis. If you're interested in learning more or want to host a hunger simulation for your volunteers, staff, or students, reach out to our Community Educator, Alison Volz ([email protected]).

Food Pantries & Soup Kitchens

Earlier this month, we hosted our 2nd Victory in Partnership (VIP) quarterly meeting of the year. We were joined by Sonia and Sonam Parikh from The People’s Fridge in Southwest Philly as well as Jane Ellis from Germantown Fridges to share with us about community fridges and their programs. We had a great discussion about how pantries and community fridges can work together to best serve their neighborhood.

Please click here for the latest map of community fridges in Philadelphia.

We were also joined by Doug Murphy from DoorDash, who shared about their delivery program for pantries. DoorDash offers direct deliveries from pantries to clients in need.
