Team — in order to win the speakership, Kevin McCarthy promised right-wing extremists like Lauren Boebert that he would refuse to raise the debt ceiling unless Democrats agreed to spending cuts to vital programs that American families depend on.

Now, McCarthy is trying to follow through on that promise — introducing legislation that would slash food stamps, cut Medicaid, roll back progress we’ve made fighting climate change, and wipe out over 100,000 manufacturing jobs in exchange for raising the debt ceiling.

Look, it is outrageous that the GOP majority is attempting to do so much harm to hardworking American families — let alone that they’re threatening to cause a global economic catastrophe if President Biden and congressional Democrats don’t give them what they want.
