Dear Friend,

We’re fighting in court to protect one of the rarest whales on the planet from extinction.

The Gulf of Mexico whale, also known as the Rice’s whale, was recently identified as a unique species, but excitement about the discovery was dampened when scientists announced that there are likely fewer than 100 of them remaining.

Right now, administration officials are asking a judge to throw out our case to protect the Gulf whale from oil drilling activity. They want to allow harmful oil and gas leasing and development to continue — without needed protections for Gulf communities, Gulf whales, or other threatened and endangered species.

But with your support, we will keep fighting back.

For years, Earthjustice has defended the rights of coastal communities and marine mammals to live without the threat of fossil fuels, and with your help, we will continue to fight for them in court. In honor of Earth Day, we have a special gift-matching offer. If you join this fight today, your one-time gift will be matched $2:$1 or your monthly gift will be matched $3:$1 for 12 months.

It’s been more than 50 years since the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara that helped catalyze the first Earth Day. It’s been 13 years since the devastating BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill wreaked havoc on the people and the ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 people and wiping out an estimated 20 percent of the Rice’s whale population. But somehow, the Biden administration is acting as if another catastrophic oil spill couldn’t possibly happen.

This Earth Month, we set an ambitious $562,000 online fundraising goal to overcome a revenue shortfall. A generous donor has agreed to match all donations to help us. Will you join thousands of environmentalists with an Earth Month commitment today?

We are so grateful for your unwavering commitment. You truly understand that we must protect endangered wildlife not just on Earth Day but every day. With you by our side, we will not stop until those who pollute our oceans and threaten wildlife are held accountable.

Sincerely,
Chris Eaton
Earthjustice Senior Attorney
