Offshore Wind Development Updates:
Recently, I was proud to join my House of Representatives colleagues in passing two bipartisan amendments which attempt to tap the brakes on offshore wind expansion. These amendments were added to H.R. 5, the Lower Energy Costs Act Bill, which increases the production and export of American energy.
The bipartisan Smith Amendment provides that no later than 60 days after the date of enactment, the Comptroller General shall conduct a study to assess the sufficiency of the environmental review processes for offshore wind. The bipartisan Van Drew Amendment provides that the Comptroller General of the United States shall publish a report on all potential adverse effects of wind energy development in the North Atlantic Planning Area.
We should never allow foreign companies to control our energy supply - much less harm our marine environment, and I will continue fighting to halt the expansion of offshore wind developments until further investigation is done.
Attending the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus on Behalf of UMES
I was proud to address the Congressional Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus on behalf of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES)--our only HBCU in Maryland's First District. Since UMES opened their doors in 1886, they have been an important education center for students interested in pursuing careers in agriculture, business, education, and health. As numerous jobs go unfilled in these fields, the efforts of UMES to train and educate our next generation of innovative leaders is important work, and I am proud to represent their needs in Congress.
