Friends,
Tomorrow there's an important opportunity for Portlanders to show up for young people. Join us in supporting the Portland Youth Climate Strike as students from around the city take to the streets to demand Governor Tina Kotek stop fossil fuel expansion statewide.
WHEN: Friday, April 21 10 am PST
WHERE: Oregon Convention Center, 777 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. March will go from the Convention Center to Pioneer Courthouse Square, 715 SW Morrison St.
WHO: Oregon students, and community members and organizations supporting them
WHY: With the strike happening just days after Kotek’s 100th day in office, the students’ goal is to push Kotek to prioritize climate justice in her agenda. Through the slogan “deny the permit, condemn the pipeline” they are highlighting the importance for her to stop the expansion of fossil fuel and dangerous liquid fuel transport at storage at the Critical Energy Infrastructure Hub – including Zenith Energy – and the expansion of the Gas Transition Northwest XPress (GTNXpress) pipeline.
As youth activists take to the street to protest dangerous fossil fuel infrastructure, state legislators are considering a new “domestic terrorism” bill (HB 2772) that environmental and social justice activists fear could be abused against nonviolent protestors. No new domestic terrorism criminal offense should be passed in Oregon without extensive community engagement, input, and listening from the Oregonians who most directly experience the overreaches of state power!
If you're in the area, join this day of action to support these awesome young people and advocate for our climate! Follow Portland Youth Climate Strike on Twitter and Instagram for the latest developments and learn more at pycs.org
