For 50 years, young women have benefitted from the opportunity to compete equally in sports under the protections of Title IX — learning valuable lessons about hard work, teamwork, and commitment. Today, we are fighting for the long-standing traditions of women’s sports so that future generations can enjoy the many opportunities they offer. It’s a sad reality that the woke Left values the basic rights of women so low that they have pushed for regulations to allow men to compete against women in athletic events. 

Today, I voted in favor of H.R. 734, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023 — legislation that defines sex as “a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth” when determining compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. I'm a proud cosponsor of this legislation and believe it is a strong first step in protecting girls in sports. With this bill, we are pushing back against the radical leftist agenda to protect the opportunities afforded to women.

Secretary Mayorkas Is Not Performing His Duties

This week, I questioned Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas during a Committee on Homeland Security hearing and criticized the Secretary’s inability to establish operational control of the border.

In my opening statement, I presented statistics produced by United States Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz and referred to the Border Patrol Chief’s testimony in which he stated that five of the nine border sectors were not secure. 

During my questioning, Secretary Mayorkas contradicted his own Border Patrol Chief's testimony and instead continued to purport that the border is secure under the definition of "operational control" that he has defined for himself. "Operational control" is defined by law in the Secure the Fence Act of 2006 as "the prevention of all unlawful entries into the United States, including entries by terrorists, other unlawful aliens, instruments of terrorism, narcotics, and other contra- band." 

Under this definition, the border is not secure. 

I also presented statistics from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) showing that, of the 1.2 million illegal migrants with orders for removal, ICE only removed approximately 70,000 in fiscal year 2022. This statistic alone shows that Secretary Mayorkas is not enforcing the law as written.
