Friend,

In the United States, the people do not directly elect the President. In
fact, five of our 46 Presidents have come into office without winning the
greatest number of popular votes nationwide, including two of the last
four.

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPV) is a measure that would
guarantee that the person who wins the election for President is the
candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the
District of Columbia. The NPV bill would correct for the inherently
undemocratic impact of the Electoral College system that gives enormous
influence to a handful of states across the nation.

Join us in urging state lawmakers to support the National Popular Vote
Interstate Compact to uphold the will of American voters.

Popular Vote legislation! >>

The U.S. Constitution gives states the exclusive power to decide how their
electoral votes are awarded. Fifteen states and D.C. (with 195 electoral
votes) have already enacted National Popular Vote into law, and it will go
into effect when passed by states with an additional 75 electoral votes.

Right now - the National Popular Vote bill is under consideration in 11
states. Of these states, Michigan and Minnesota are very close to passing
the NPV – which would get us 25 electoral votes closer to the tally needed
for it to take effect.

Once enacted, the National Popular Vote law would:

* Guarantee the presidency to the candidate who gets the most votes in
all 50 states and D.C.
* Apply the one-person-one-vote principle to presidential elections and
make very voter equal throughout the United States.
* Give candidates a reason to campaign in all 50 states so that every
voter, in every state, will be politically relevant in every
presidential election.
* Increase voter turnout.
* Help ensure the peaceful transfer of power in presidential elections.

vote in our presidential elections. >>

The consequences of our outdated system are massive. As the Far Right
seeks to exploit and undermine our current system even further, we can
expect that future far-right candidates may also become president despite
losing the popular vote nationwide.

Thanks for all that you do in the fight to strengthen our democracy.

Zach, People For the American Way
