Friend,
We need to talk about Dianne Feinstein.
We’re seeing more and more exactly how important federal judges are. Just
this month, a Trump-appointed federal judge rescinded FDA approval for the
abortion pill, a medication that has been used safely for nearly 25
years.(1) It’s just one example of the terrible fallout from the hundreds
of judges Mitch McConnell rammed through for Trump, and it’s why it is SO
IMPORTANT that the Senate push through President Biden’s nominees for the
remaining 78 federal judicial vacancies.
Except Dianne Feinstein is holding them up.
Senator Feinstein has been absent from the Senate since February, and she
has missed 58 votes, including those that would have pushed nominees
forward. Without her on the Judiciary Committee, Democrats don’t have the
majority they need.(2)
Sen. Feinstein’s absence isn’t only affecting judicial nominees. The FCC
is still stuck with a 2-2 gridlock, the USPS Board of Governors is short
members, and the Secretary of Labor’s position is sitting empty.(3) All in
all, 94 key positions are not being filled, and Sen. Feinstein’s absence
is exacerbating the problem.
Senate Republicans have blocked efforts to temporarily replace Sen.
Feinstein, so the only way to salvage the rest of this term and fill
critical judgeships is for her to resign so she can be immediately
replaced by an active member.(4)
Even the Sacramento Bee has called for her resignation. However, this is a
very tough call to make. Sen. Feinstein has served the Senate for more
than 28 years, and asking for her resignation is a difficult choice. We
need to know what you want us to do.
