Especially when you consider recent efforts to protect reproductive rights, pass gun control laws, and stand up for our working families, I'm so proud to call Illinois my home state.
But today **specifically**, I wanted to highlight what makes Illinois especially great: the legalization of cannabis.

Let's get serious for a moment, John. There's a stat I'd like you to consider –
Even when consuming at the same rates, Black people are nearly 4x as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession violations than White people.
John, marijuana enforcement disproportionately criminalizes black and brown people, making it difficult for them to support families and contribute to their communities.
Besides the devastating harm that comes with being arrested and incarcerated, having a marijuana conviction on someone's record means it's increasingly difficult to find a job, secure housing, and apply for life-changing government assistance.
The bottom line: We must vote to legalize cannabis, so that we can focus our public safety resources on addressing the root causes of violence and not low-level drug possession.
Which is why I've worked hard to push the needle on cannabis legalization. When I was in the IL House, I cosponsored the Cannabis Regulation and Taxation Act of 2019, authorizing the recreational use of cannabis.
